By the end of World War II, most turf farmhouses had been abandoned, or even razed to the ground. In recent years, however, public opinion has changed, and the cultural importance of the turf house has gained acceptance. In the turf house, ancient building techniques from the Settlement Age have been preserved, together with the changes wrought by the experience of generations in adapting to their surroundings. The turf house is, however, first and foremost one of man's many responses to the need to build shelter against wind and weather, to create a haven to work and live in. The turf house is one aspect of the history of the home.
