ELENA CARLINI AND PIETRO VALLE

(das boot feature June - July, 2000)

June 2002, update with new works

Baldovino Restaurant, Rocca Bernarda-Udine, 2001

A renovation and interior arrangement of an existing building with a new restaurant and bar for a winery in the Friuli hills. A long yellow wall organizes the various spaces of the restaurant: it is a frame and a carved mass at the same time; it is a service “spine” with air circulation, light, doors but it is also a visual and tectonic reference point, it bounces around the natural light coming from the vast window openings and the landscape.

De Visintini-Taucer House, Trieste, 2001

A renovation and transformation of a stone house in the Carsic high plain; added to the higher rectangular house “box”: an irregular entry volume, a bow-window towards the garden, a small porch, a long series of windows to the south while the north side has less openings to protect house from strong winds. The rectangular main living room becomes articulated by minor sub-spaces that expand the interior towards the garden.

“Tight Line” installation in the 18th century Villa Manin in Passariano – Udine 2001

A 700 feet floor line made of iron plates is positioned along the main entry promenade of the Baroque Villa Manin, a large 18th century complex characterised by two large curvilinear wings that extend the main body towards the Friuli countryside. The line, slightly off axis, invites visitors to walk along and read a series of enigmatic sentences printed on it that put into question the hierarchical spatial arrangement. The public, positioned along the main axis enters and exits the complex, relates text and space, buildings and countryside but is left with open questions instead of easy formulas. The installation created during the 2001 HICETNUNC art festival, lasted one month and the iron plates became gradually covered with a layer of rust creating an alive being that changed within this pristine historic artifact.
