ELENA CARLINI AND PIETRO VALLE

EXHIBITION DESIGN FOR THE TRAVELING SHOW "THE VANISHING CURTAIN, URBAN
MUTATIONS IN EASTERN GERMANY' 1995-97

TV screening photos

The exhibition is composed by written texts and photographs describing
social and physical changes in East German cities after the fall of the
Berlin wall in 1990. The texts have been printed on 9 feet tall paper
scrolls that are suspended from tension cables and form a screen in the
center of the room, almost mimicking the divided Germany with a new
"curtain of words" through which the public can peep through while reading
the texts on both sides of it. The photos are screened on monitors that are
also veiled by a curtain of black translucent fabric recalling political
censorship on information. The photos show the exhibition in the 16th
century interiors of the "Angelo Mai" Library at the University of Bergamo
in Italy. "The Vanishing Curtain" has been on display in twelve
universities in the U.S. and Europe between 1995 and 1997.
