OPTICS AND MEDICAL EQUIPMENT SHOWROOMS IN TRIESTE, ITALY 1997-98

Two long and narrow commercial spaces are located on both sides of a glass
arcade within an existing building. We were asked to design the interiors
of both showrooms and tried to unify the overall space by using the same
materials and colors on both sides of the arcade. We selected red painted
and almost white maple veneered furniture but assigned these colors to
opposite elements in the two spaces so to make one an inverted mirror image
of the other. In the optics showroom the counter is in maple and the wall
display panels in the background are red while in the medical equipment
showroom the counter is red and the wall cases are in maple. The window
display is kept minimal so to maintain total transparency between the two
spaces and enhance the play of identity/difference created by the new
furniture.
