ELENA CARLINI AND PIETRO VALLE
"EMPTY AIR" - INSTALLATION IN AN ABANDONED INDUSTRIAL STRUCTURE DURING
THE
"HICETNUNC" ART FESTIVAL - SAN VITO AL TAGLIAMENTO, ITALY 1999
Light wall
(in collaboration with Monica Bianchettin, Ado Furlan and Vittorio
Pierini)
"The space where we intervened was a former silkworm breeding factory, an
abandoned industrial structure with large spaces where screens of cane and
wood where stacked. The screens were once covered with mulberry leaves and
silkworms grew up on them. We selected three contiguous spaces: a storage
where old furniture had been amassed, the stair hall and an empty room. We
left the storage as it was, to symbolize chaos; we didn't touch the stair
hall either. In the empty space we suspended from the ceiling fifty cane
screens to form a serial forest of planes that contrasted with the storage
mess. We then built and hanged an aluminum frame with neon tubes within it.
We clad it with translucent fiberglass to form a twenty meter long light
wall, a sort of chrysalis crossing the three environments that were once
separated. This sign joined them pointing out out three ways of occupying
empty space (chaos, order and movement) and thus highlighting the abandoned
state of the structure."
